GRAWE sidebyside, the first official Elite-International of the Afghan Racketlon Federation – which was founded in their Austrian exile – took place on 24 November 2018. Opponent: World Champion Austria!
As part of an integration project the Racketlon Federation Austria had introduced Afghan refugees to Racketlon. At one of the biggest Racketlon tournaments in the world, the members of the young team had been offered a platform to present themselves. The result of the Elite-International was of only secondary importance; World Champion Austria remained undefeated. The atmosphere was friendly and fair – you know each other. For more than a year now, eight young men and two young women have been participating in a weekly training with players from the Austrian National Team. It was only in September that the Afghan Racketlon Federation was founded as a non-profit sports federation for players in their Austrian exile – following an initiative from Marcel Weigl and with the support of Team-Coordinator Doris Turner.
“It’s nice to play here against Austria. We want to play as well as possible against our coaches, “Afghanistan’s Playing Captain, Mostafa Kazemi, had stated in the immediately preceding interview with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, ORF. A great deal of enthralling rallies gave an idea of the potential of the young team. “Afghanistan has done well! 15 years ago Austria also had to pay dearly in the first Elite-International against the former World Champion Sweden, “said Marcel Weigl, the Executive President of the Racketlon Federation Austria.
